GM does not believe it will sell enough units to justify development costs. Goes with the attitude that people don't like hatchbacks...why they dropped hatchbacks too. Sportcombi is a nice compromise, but it's still a wagon vs hatchback. Apparently they didn't pay attention to the sales of various hatchbacks out there...Toyota Prius, Audi A3, and others who have done very well in the market. Saab's problem is not hatch vs no hatch...and it's not price either (My 1991 9000CD cost about the same sticker price that I paid for my 2007 9-3!!!). The problem is lack of dealers (I live in DC area, millions of people here and only 2 Saab dealers!), also lack of a quality service experience for customers. Making customers feel like criminals just to get some warranty work done, etc. BMW isn;t much better here, but Lexus is so good with service, it's forcing Saab and BMW, and others to improve.
The bottom line is, the more cars Saab can sell, the more likely they will develop a wider model range (including a coupe). Time will tell. Since Ford is holding on to Volvo, GM will very likely keep Saab.
