Thanks for the detailed response. I too tend to be cautious about start-up and stops but not quite to the same degree. I usually wait at least for the choke to go off prior to driving (a habit from motorcylce riding that may or may not be helping me any) and then take it easy until the whole engine gets up to operating temperature. There may be some lingering debate on warm-up but it seems like with new cars the suggestion is that driving the car warms it up faster than idling and is therefore better overall for the engine (very moderate driving isn't boosting the turbo much). I think most would agree that taking it easy until the engine is fully warmed is a good strategy (i.e., metal expands and as you say oil doesn't do its job well until hot). I might idle a bit for cooldown but usually I'm not driving hard anyway before I shut the car down.

For my prior C900 the spec was to idle for 15-20 seconds prior to shutdown and the turbo lasted until the pinion wore out at 210k mi (it whistled/whined for 60k but still worked fine). I think the turbo cooling has advanced since then to essentially eliminate the need (though it certainly doesn't hurt to pause before shutdown to be safe and after getting used to this with the C900 I tend to do it by habit).
