That's exactly my thinking on the subject and I teach as many driving students downshifting on an automatic (not the Saab) as will take the training. About 80% go for it. I do believe it teaches anticipation far better than leaving the automatic in D and anticipation leads to smoothness leads to far better/safer (not to mention far more economical) driving.

My theory is, keep 'em busy around town anticipating the 'need' for shifting to climb/decend hills; to go round corners; and to bring the car to a stop ....or a crawl to anticipate the green.
