Mine went south yesterday (about 2 years, 1 month of life). One second it worked fine, the next it had 8 volts and all my electricals were going bonkers (dials fluttering, lights blinking, horn sounding, clock blinking, lots of clicks, multiple error messages, SID going in/out). Scary but new battery put everything back in order.
I'm not expert but there is a particular type of sealed battery (of which I'm going to guess these factory batteries are) that has a short life and quick mode of failure. Harley went to sealed maint-free batteries about 6 years ago and everyone learned quickly that you had to replace the batteries every year (or two if feeling lucky) to avoid being stranded. I think you can find aftermarket batteries that will last longer, but I wouldn't trust a factory battery for more than 2 years. SAAB payed to tow my car AND provide a free replacement as this was under warranty and free roadside assist (sort of ironic that I'm getting all this free service on the day GM goes to the hill with their plan for how they will actually make, rather than lose, money).
