I just can't figure out how the water is getting in the trunk!! Only the passenger side, too. Checked the brake light fixtures thinking that was the problem. No luck. Last night during a downpour I took out the carpet (which the back right passenger corner is soaked) and the sidewall carpet (which is soaked on the part that is on the floor).
I found that the water was coming from somewhere in the C pillar and seems to run down behind that and drip onto the floor of the trunk and pool up in the area between the wheel well and drain plug for the sun roof.
I also poured water in the lip that the trunk closes into, thinking that maybe the seal/gasket is old. Doesn't appear to be that either.
[I checked the sun roof drain tube, thinking that there was a remote possibility that if it was clogged the water would for some reason leak into the trunk - although that didn't really make sense to me because I would think that would leak into the headliner which is completely dry. Poured water into the rear passenger side a few times to make sure. It seemed to work fine.]
Any ideas? Also what is the rubber vent thing on the bottom of the side body in the trunk on the passenger side? That is all wet and holding sand and mud. Thanks for any input.
