You may want to open the hood after cold start and check if the clicking sound you are hearing is coming from under the valve cover. If so it could be oil starved tappets. I had this sound for a time (always started right after rpms came down from initial start and faded after about a minute or two of idling). The sound was consistent with collapsed tappets and I assumed this was due to oil draining from the head in between starts. I am told (though I don't know for sure) there is a washer or other part installed during oil change that helps prevent the oil from draining completely away from the tappets and, interestingly, the sound dissapeared after the next oil change and I have not heard it since (this was a few changes ago). Such a condition could cause unnecessary wear over the long term and presumably might be caused by inattentive oil changes. There are also very faint/slight clicking sounds from the AC after startup that if very pronounced might be failing vent open/close gears clashing.
My car also idles like a diesel and my '87 900T actually made a similar sound. Once the car is warm (at least w/ the manual) the idle is rock solid.
