The turbos used on the sports sedan 2.0L and 2.8L are very relible when compared to the GT17 and GT15 used on the previous 9-3 models. As Anders said, mostly the only time they will require replacement is when the oil is not changed/ vehicle is not maintained.
The only real failure I have seen beyond oil coking up the oil supply and return lines and starving the turbo of oil is when the bypass valve diaphragm tears and the CEL is ignored. When the bypass valve fails it will cause compressor surge and slowly will destroy the internal seals and bearings. The new diaphragm is $$$ but a replacement turbo is much more. Integrating the bypass vale into the compressor housing is one major changes in the turbo system from the old 9-3 to the new 9-3.
