that with all the computerized electronic gizmo crap that is loaded into the SID that they could have included a running digital voltmeter. Though admittedly limited info comes from a voltmeter and the charge light serves the main function of telling you if the alternator is going south, I like the ability to check the running voltage while the car is operating (gives an indication of how much extra juice is available to charge the battery given all the other loads on the electrical system).
With a voltmeter one can see which accessories have the biggest impact on the line voltage during operations. On my C900, I recall the headlights were probably the biggest draw...then AC was another big one (may be different now with halogen/other bulbs). For those doing lots of short trips with the AC and headlights on all the time (which is the default setting on the 9-3), in addition to all the other electronic gizmos, it might be prudent, say, when driving on the highway to turn the lights, AC and other gizmos off for a time to give the battery a good shot of what it needs. Of course, it may be that the charging system is more than adequate to do the job with all things running and the battery is just a bad unit from the get go :). I drive my no options except cold 2.0T 50 miles/day highway mostly with the headlights off and my stock battery still only lasted 2 years.
