Unfortunately, its not that simple. Here's how it was explained to me ..

The lease company (GMAC?) owns the vehicle outright. When you turn it in, the dealership can buy it from the lease company and then turn around and sell it - but that's usually not what happens b/c they dont want to pay the buyout price either (even if their price is slightly lower than what your price was). What normally happens is it goes to auction -- an auction only available to "Platinum" dealerships (i.e. a select few GM dealerships across the country). If it does not sell their, it then goes to a general dealership auction (available to more car dealerships, including "pre-owned" lots/brokers). If it STILL does not sell, it then goes to an auction which is available to the public. By then, the best of the cars have been snatched up and you only have the "picked over" cars remaining ..
