Just put HD Bilstein rear shocks on my daugher's 2003 9-2 SS. Very easy. Remove top shock support along with shock so you can get top captive nut off more easily. I cut off plastic boot, put vise grip on piston, and use impact wrench air tool to remove nut. Took about 30 minutes per side.
I plan on doing front struts (Bilsteins) on her car in August. I have done struts on my 9000 and don't expect it to be a big deal. I would buy a good strut tool or have shop remove and replace cartridge, once you have removed strut assy. I would not make your own tool, as this could be a safety issue...Bottom line, either get the right tools and be safe or just remove strut assy and have shop swap cart...either way, you still save money and avoid injury....
