I worked at GM during the development of OnStar and they did not build the analog system to become garbage. Analog was the only network that provided sufficient coverage across most of the country. Digital wasn't comprehensive enough. Eventually, they made the boxes upgradeable, but some of the older analog boxes were not upgradeable.
You could make the same argument with any cell phone provider as well. They sold us phones that are useless now. But the difference is that the service providers control the networks. GM had no control over what the telecomms do. When pushing the envelope of technology, everything will not be perfect the first time around. They should be commended for trying and for offering a feature that has saved lives, helped recover stolen vehicles, unlocked cars and so on.
