A Saab box would be a Thule box, so there's no difference there. As others said, you can use pretty much anything, so long as you can mount it securely to the roof rack. The distance between the bars is fixed with the accessory roof bars on sedans, so you should check that the box you're thinking of will work, though most are adjustable pretty well.

As for loading, the OM will tell you not to put more than 220 lbs on the roof, and that INCLUDES the box and rack. I'd tend more towards soft items (blankets, clothing in soft suitcases, bags of dog food, etc.) for lightness and the relative ease with which you can pack it full. If you must store hard suitcases in the box, make sure they'll fit, for one, and do what you can to secure them in place inside the box. Most good ones are sealed well, but if in doubt, double-bag the important stuff.

Lastly, a long, thin box should - in theory, at least - have less of an impact on your fuel mileage than a short, wide box. You'll take a hit either way, but it should be less with the long box.
