I haven't owned a 9-3 but if I were shopping for a Saab I would honestly try my very best to avoid 1999-2003 9-5's and 2003-2004 9-3's. After those years they're all very good bets. Sludge is the main concern for the earlier 9-5's, but if you know what to look out for and can have the oil pan dropped to make sure everything's all clear they could be a safe bet. 2003 9-3's are the first model year of the 9-3ss and they were all absolute turds. 2004's are better, but 2005 is when almost all the bugs were worked out.
