12v lead acid is shitty technology Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 16:58:26 In Reply to: Re: '08 9-3 Aero - dead battery after sitting 1 week, Aaron, Mon, 11 Jan 2010 16:50:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab doesn't make batteries or tires, so it has nothing to do with Saab, but in regards to batteries it's unbelievable that vehicles still use archaic 12 volt lead acid batteries. Practically every other vehicle that uses 12 volt technology at least has the common sense to have backup batteries, why not in cars? And auto makers have contemplated for years switching to 24 volt or 36 volt technology and more modern battery materials. Why they don't makes me very suspicious of the battery folks.
Anyway, cars or motorcycles, batteries are the biggest single problem by far. Good one day, bad the next, even when relatively new, is the norm not the exception.
Four cylinder turbo cars have lower compression and very low cranking loads so a weak battery may work fine for years. I bet a good load test would find your battery marginal. Auto batteries are not deep cycle, not designed to be fully depleted like boat batteries. Once they're dead they are generally weak though they might seem to continue to work in mild weather in a turbo Saab.
