I would take any Consumer Reports data for Saabs with a big grain of salt. What is the total sample size? Darned small, I would guess, as it would be the intersection of A. Saab Owners, B. Consumer Reports subscribers, and C., Saab-owning Consumer Reports subscribers who can actually be bothered to fill out and return the survey. Small sample size means the data is very easily skewed, and the self-reporting aspect is suspect as well. One person's "major dilemma" is another person's "minor rattle". There is certainly NO reason why a 2006 on average would be less reliable than a 2005, they are 99.5% the same car.
I would also posit that in general buyers of European luxury cars are going to be more fussy than the average car owner, as they tend to be more informed and have higher expectations, since they shelled out all that money for the car. Also, the more toys you have the more things there are to go wrong. You are never going to have a dead SID in a Toyota Corolla.
That said, the '03 certainly had plenty of issues out of the gate. The vast majority were fixed under warranty, but I am sure they were VERY annoying to those early beta-testing owners. As stuff was discovered, it got fixed as the model years went on.
