First thing to do is check for fault codes with Tech2 and also make sure the O-bus (optical bus) is working OK. This is not a system for the do-it-yourself person.
As far as the radio, The part on the dash that most people refer tp as the radio is actually the ICM (Infotainment Control Module) The actual radio (EHU) can't be seen and is located behind the indash CD player.
Any faulty control module (CU/PU, ICM, AMP1, AMP2, CDF/CDCF, or EHU) along the O-bus could take out the system.
Even if you get the Audio sytem working, Onstar won't work. That car had an anolog Onstar system that became inoperative a couple years ago when cell phone companies were no longer required to support anolog systems. The newer Onstar systems are digital.
