9-3 SS Exterior Mirror Support Pitting?

Ok... went to clean off what I thought was road salt that had collected near the pivot of where the mirrors fold in (the black triangular mirror base) and discovered that the "salt" was something like aluminum pitting under paint (I had thought those supports were black plastic).
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution other than replacing the mirror brackets? Repainting them?
This is a 2003 - and if this is the worst exterior thing I have to address on a 7-year-old car, I'll consider myself lucky. But the parts alone look like they are $600.
Thanks
Dante
