In addition to the 9-5's listed in my signature, I bought a new 2002 Aero SW (my first SAAB), and over 4 years ago got a 1999 SE(4) for my daughter when she turned 16 (she now drives the Arc). Also had a 1999 SE(6) SW for about 5 months between the Aero SW/SC's. Quite a bit of experience with 9-5's.
Not too much experience with 9-3's, as I got this one just 4 months ago and have only put a couple thousand miles on it.
My 9-3 is an Aero, so I'm sure the base suspension is more comfortable, but you sure feel road imperfections. If headed for significant drive, the 9-3 would be left in the garage. But that's a terrible place to leave one, as it has SO much sharper handling. There really is no comparison.
The 9-3 is going to be my wife's car, once we sell hers. She could be driving the 9-3 now, but prefers her Mazda Millenia (go figure). So days where I'm not riding the bike, I've been driving the 9-3, while I still can. I'm expecting a trailer hitch to be delivered to work today for me to mount on the SC, and last night I was trying to decide if it would fit in the 9-3's trunk. I know it will easily (i.e., no concerns whatsoever) fit in the SC, but I'd rather drive the 9-3.
I think that the 9-5 interior took a cheapening appearance change with the 2006 model, and the 2004 9-3 interior looks a little cheap.
I've not experienced squeaks or rattles with the 9-3.
Both great cars. More room and comfort in the 9-5, more fun in the 9-3.
