While it is true that you can use "regular" gas in a Saab, you will get sufficiently better gas mileage out of a modern Saab to make it worth putting in higher octane premium. But putting in regular won't hurt anything, and I would certainly do so on a loaner, unless I was driving it far enough to put in multiple tanks. In fact, last week I returned a rental car full of E85 crap. And yes, the car in question (Chevy HHR, ugh) was rated to use the stuff.

I find that on my car, I see a noticeable increase in fuel mileage between a tank of the 91 octane premium I can get in Maine vs. the 93 octane premium I can get in NH. Same brand of gas (meaning same additive package, theoretically) too.
