Just finished installing some green 3mm LEDs in my 2009 SS. Test drove the new 9-5 and loved the green backlighting on the door handles, so I attempted to replicate this in my 9-3. Removed the door panels (very easy btw), drilled small holes in the handle crevasse, wired up the LEDs to the lock/unlock button backlight circuit, hot-glued LEDs into place, and put it all back together. Very low-profile, you can't see the bulbs unless you open the door and position your head at a weird angle looking inside the handle. I also put an LED in each door pocket just for fun.
The lock/unlock button light circuit is perfect because its not a 12V circuit (according to my voltmeter it was around 2V, which is perfect for LEDs). Plus it's perfect for a power source since it turns on/off automatically.
Picture below and link is to a slideshow for more pictures.
The color match is perfect and I think it adds a nice touch to any 9-3, and it looks OEM in my opinion. Let me know what you all think!
