I've had my 2006 9-3SC 2.0T w/5-M/T since new and now have 79,000 miles on it. The only issues I've had are a failed AMP1 (replaced under warranty, this is the amp located under the driver's seat that dies if it gets wet), broken front coil spring (replaced under a Saab extended warranty that was issued due to spring corrosion), and a sticking rear brake caliper that I replaced on my own. I enjoy the car and do not in any way regret my purchase. Well, I paid $30k new and they depreciate way too fast so in respect I should have probably bought a Civic, but you're getting in on the good side of the depreciation. The car is a blast to drive, the powertrain is really nice and it handles so much better than the NG900/OG9-3's. The downsides: Poor quality materials throughout the interior; leather that wears too quickly, soft-touch buttons and knobs all over the dash that peel easily (a common problem on lots of newer cars), harsh ride and more rattles and noises than the old pickup truck from the Lassie show. But I still love it. Is it DIY friendly? No, but neither is virtually any other new car. I've done brakes and all the regular maintenance myself and that type of stuff is not a problem. But when the water-pump goes, it'll probably be a weekend project instead of three to four hours for your '99 9-3.
