I recently purchased a 2003 9-3 Linear with 89K miles and a blown turbo. The previous owner told me that he had just changed the turbo and his mechanic called him to tell him that the vehicle was still smoking, but he was not willing to put any more money into it.
At first I thought that the smoking was from oil that was lodged in the intercooler and the exhaust system, but it just kept smoking badly. I pulled the turbo and found alot of sludge inside. I ordered a turbo, and when it arrived I pulled the lines to clean them before installing the new turbo and found out that the return line was conpletely clogged up. I tried clearing it with a wire hanger but could not; and so I ordered a new one.
When I drained the oil, it looked as if it had not been changed in 5 years or more. I pulled the oil pan and it looked as if it was coated with tar. There was a broken bolt and a piece timing chain guige in it. I pulled the valve cover and found a lot of sludge there also.
I cleaned every thing and put it back togather, started the car and heard noise coming from the timing chain. Alas! I forgot to pull the timing cover. I pulled it and found out that the left gulde was broken in two pieces and the other bolt was also broken and was lodging in there. I ordered the timing components, and as soon as the new bolts arrive, I will measure them and then try to drill out the broken bolts and rethread the holes. If this does not work, I'll buy a used engine and install it.
