Everything electrical pretty much. As John says, its needed for almost every control module in the vehicle. Needed for adding keys, resetting the service indicator early, changing any modules programmed settings, adding any factory add on options such as fogs or SPA, CD players, CD changers, Aux inputs, replacing any stereo component etc etc.
The new 9-5 is just as "bad" but worse. In the sense it does not even use the Tech 2 for anything. It uses GMs new MDI setup which has wireless com with the vehicle and is laptop computer biased. The 9-4X also uses this diag tool. The most recent Tech 2 version even has 2012 9-3, a vehicle that was not even built.
With time, I think the worst ones to get parts, service, programming/support for will be the NG9-5 and 9-4X no doubt. I have no plans to make the MDI purchase to service/repair only 1.5 years of 9-5 and less than 1000 units of 9-4x. Not cost effective at all.
