Is the piston stuck or do you need the proper tools to retract it?
If the piston is stuck, give it one good crack to break it loose and try again. If this doesn't free it you will need to by a new caliper assembly. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK OF CALIPER DAMAGE. Strike the piston on its center line.
I had this exact problem on my 9-3SC. I then called my Brother-in-law, a heavy equipment mechanic, to give me a hand since he had recently done a brake job on my sister's 9-3SS. After he was stymied by the stuck piston he asked me if I wanted him to try the old time mechanic's hammer crack before a final attempt. Success!
John Myers subsequently posted that stuck pistons are so common he always used a hammer on them prior to the retractor tool on the 9-3SS family rear brakes.
Do you have a set of brake caliper piston retractors? I bought a kit then had to buy a separate adapter to fit the 9-3 piston. This same adapter fits recent Volvos and the early BMW Minis. The large Harbor Freight kit has the correct size adapter but the smaller kit does not. You may be able to borrow a kit from a local auto parts store.
Think of this as a ratcheting compression process. You need to turn the piston a small amount (less than 1/4 turn) to free it/unlock it so you can compress it a short distance. Turn-Compress-Turn-Compress etc. You also need the bleed valve open for the trapped brake fluid to escape.
