Not without a warranty. Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Mon, 23 Sep 2013 10:49:24 In Reply to: 2010 9-3x Wagon, steve, Sat, 21 Sep 2013 15:20:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have always been a firm believer that aftermarket warranties are crocks of sh*t. They're a scam and a ploy and you're better off putting the $2500-3000 you'd spend on a warranty in a bank account because that'll more than likely cover any repairs you come across while you own the car. This is however not the case with a XWD Saab. The components in this system, while out-of-this-world advanced and efficient, are also out-of-this-world expensive and fragile.
I bought a 2008 9-3 Turbo-X in March with 68k miles on it (high mileage for me, but it was from a friend for a great price and included many service records and the remainder of his aftermarket warranty). Within a month the front transfer case was pissing stinky green hydraulic fluid out around the propeller shaft seal. The rotation of the prop shaft would then splatter this fluid all over the bottom of the car (rust-proofing, hooray!) and exhaust ("what is that smell, are we on fire?"). I was nervous about parts availability, but the parts were in very quickly. The transfer case alone was a $3,300 part and I left the dealership with the warranty paying out $4,700!! That's three mortgage payments! And the transfer case isn't usually a problem point. It's usually the rear diff that leaks. Proof that anything can and will go wrong with XWD.
Anyway, some people have that kind of money sitting there and that's fine; piece of mind. But $4700 out of my pocket after having just bought a house and the car would have been crippling. The car is a BLAST to drive. I love it. It's gorgeous. But it'll have a for sale sign on it very shortly after it hits 100k and my aftermarket warranty is done.
I'm not ragging on the car or trying to scare you away from it. It would be a great car for you, I'm sure. Just be aware of what you're getting into, and buy a warranty. You can get a very comprehensive Saab Secure warranty backed by Ally for about $2,500.
