Those rubber boots on the C/V joint is notorious to break on the AWD Volvo, especially the front C/V joint since it sits near the catalytic converter and the little amount of grease inside seeps out or dries up.
Usually I hear a clinkety, clinkety clink noise during acceleration when the front C/V joint is dry.
Volvo started to sell a C/V joint kit because of this since otherwise the old way was to replace the whole drive shaft.
