I would vote for the ABS/ESP pump/module or the electronic throttle control. If it was the ABS sensor, then you'd have another message stating ABS failure too.
It can be the steering wheel sensor but you'll have the failure just by turning the wheel from lock to lock. The yaw sensor can be at fault too, since it is used during an ESP event. Could be a wiring issue with no sensors or modules involved.
Anyway, wihtout a proper Tech 2, it's a guessing game.
If it's the ABS/ESP module, easy fix. Used parts or refurbuished are easy to find, these are very common Bosch items. Easy to replace too. If I remember right, it 's a self-bleeding part, so it's just R&R.
Throttle body should not be that difficult. Heck, any parts except the wheel bearings are easy to replace.
You may want to ask the pros if any of them needs to be divorced from the car before replacement.
Please let us know the outcome...
