Gas gauge problem

Hi. Immediately after filling my gas tank two fill ups ago, when I left the gas station, the gas gauge dropped from the top to just above the empty level, and the low fuel warning light came on. There were no other warning lights on. Every time I started the car after that, the same thing would happen - the gauge would go to the proper level, and then within a couple of minutes, drop. I went to the dealership the next day, and they hooked-up a Tech II. They said it was the fuel sensor (about $450 to replace.) I made an appointment to bring it back at the end of the week after I used up most of the gas. After leaving the dealership, the gauge worked fine (did not drop again), and showed the proper level ever since. I cancelled the service appointment.
The next time I filled the tank, it happened all over again, same as before, for a couple of days, then was fine.
My question is, if it's the sensor, shouldn't it be bad all the time? It sounds to me like something (i.e., a float) is sticking.
The car has only 43K miles, why would a sensor fail that soon?
Anyone have any ideas? Is the dealer correct? Would a bottle of STP cleaner help?
Thanks,
Mike B.
