Having the numbers from the claims adjustor will be essential because they get to determine the value of the car (which you can contest), but I also suspect this car is worth more than you think it has damage. However, I disagree, if the accident was not your fault, I don't believe the insurance company gives you and negative ding for totaling the car. That's their decision and if they total it, you can buy back the car, but will probably have to have a 'salvage' title.
