Variable displacement compressors are also very fickle about the amount of refrigerant in the system. Too much or too little can impair performance. Unlike older compressors, you can't DIY this correctly just using pressure gauges; the correct measure is by weight.
It is probably worth a relatively inexpensive A/C service. Have a qualified shop evacuate and refill the system to spec, noting how much they removed versus how much they put back. They also will be able to check for proper component function
The same service could also ensure the system is holding vacuum and doesn't have any significant leaks, and introduce a fluorescent dye to assist in hunting any down.
