Trying to help a friend. The car was bought private party about a year ago and has around 150k mi on it. It was running well until just before the holidays, when it started acting up with stuttering/shuddering and slipping gears accelerating from a stop, combined with electrical issues (headlight out & replacement didn't work?). Now the car will start & run but won't engage 1st gear.
Searching thru the posts here, it looks like it could be:
1) failed tx cooler/radiator (trashed trans)
2) failed input/output tx speed sensors
3) failing ignition coils
4) never had its tx fluid changed
Tackling the easiest issue first, a fluid change, has anyone here ever used Auto-Rx in this AW (5 spd?) trans? Are there any other ideas/fixes to consider at this early diagnostic stage? Money's tight for these folks. Is there an inexpensive way to tell how expensive it's going to be to fix? Thanks.
