Broken rear half-shaft Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Mon, 28 Jan 2019 19:42:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
Went at Mécaglisse yesterday for my second of three ice track days. Everytning was well during the morning, when there was a real snowstorm and 4 in of fresh powder over the iced track. But during the 3rd session we heard a loud tunk-tunk from the back, and the car was in 2wd mode... No code or warning light in the instrument panel. There was a knocking noise coming from the left rear wheel (about 5 or 6 times per wheel revolution) but nothing else. We took the chance to drive back home and we did so without any drama. From what we can see, the outer band is off the rubber boot, but the boot is ok. The inner boot was torn since at least a year, but I've never heard any noise coming from there prior to the "bang-bang" yesterday.
I was lucky enough to secure both half-shafts used last summer, in prevision to an hypothetic repair job when time comes... Both of these shafts and the ones on the car too had torn inner boots. My indie told me this was very common. I did repair the used shaft with new EMPI boots from RM European. Easy job on the bench; easy but messy... You just have to grind off the outer edge of the housing that was pinched at the factory to prevent the rollers from coming out accidentally.
We'll do the repair job tomorrow. Any tip to dismantle that wheel carrier from the upper link?
