Have not replaced many alternators on the new 9-3 model and some were due to the freewheel clutch starting to make noise or fail, not the alternator itself.
Sometimes they remove the crank pulley when replacing the belt tensioner so it is not that much more work to replace the seal at the same time.
Since the alternator work, the belt tensioner could be replaced from above with no need to remove the crank pulley.
