Many cars nowadays have their engines mounted sideways so the "front" of the engine is usually to the left or right of the engine compartment.
And to confuse even more, the old Saab 900 had the engine mounted backwards so the front of the engine was at the back of the engine compartment making many mechanic heads "explode".
So the front engine main seal refers to the crankshaft seal which is hiding behind the belt and crank pulley.
Many times the crank pulley is removed as part of replacing the belt and tensioner and people decide to replace that seal at the same time.
It is possible to replace the belt and tensioner without removing the crank pulley, either from above or below, but it is a little bit more wrangling involved.
