Honestly, I have more or less abandoned that way to do the water pump. It is much better to remove timing cover due to that just about all balance shaft tensioner guides are broken or about to break so by removing the timing cover, you replace the chain guide and tensioner at the same time. Not all guides are necessary, just the sliding one and tensioner.
Another drawback of using the tool is that you can easily over extend the balance shaft chain and make the tensioner move one or two clicks more than it should and you end up with a whining balance shaft chain which will make you have to remove the timing cover anyway to reset the tensioner.
