I recently had the same issue with my ignition switch on my 1997 SE Turbo. I imagine yours is very similar. In my case there is a small tab in the ignition module that the spring rests against and this breaks rendering the spring action non functional. No amount of lubricant will fix it. The only cure is replacing the part. It did not involve the the key so there was no issues about a non matching ignition key. The offending part is immediately below the key. All the plastic parts in the area of the shifter had to be removed to replace the part.
