There's no need to worry about being stranded. I carry a spare coil or two in the trunk, and a socket wrench and a torx driver that fits the torx bolts that hold down the engine cover (over the coils). With that and a Philips head screwdriver, it's a five minute job to replace a coil when it goes bad (and very easy to determine which one is bad- just disconnect them each in turn, and whichever disconnection doesn't make a difference is your culprit).
As others pointed out, you can continue driving to someplace safe to do the job after a coil bites it; with the other three cylinders happy, the car just won't have its usual pep, but it still runs. Also a good idea to carry gloves in the trunk, because any work you might need to do on the road will be on a hot engine.
