I do electronics professionally and this is pretty simple to repair stuff once you can fault find it. Ancient tech by modern standards, so easy to rework.
The part with the white writing is probably an MPU that has an Analog to Digital converter to read the sensors and presumably a CAN bus interface. Obviously it will time everything off a CPS input.
The largish devices are will be the mosfets that drive the injectors and coils.
A test bench setup would be quite a bit of work figuring out how to convince it by faking the CAN to make it think it is in a car and generating the various sensor inputs. A bear to do without schematics but probably doable.
What is probably more hopeful would be to identify a common failure mechanism in it and fix that. The old 1980's-90's BMW ECUs were an example of that. In this case I would probably want to change the mosfets and any electrolytic or tantalum capacitors if just doing it blindly.
My guess is that there are just not enough cars left on the road to justify a business setting up to do this.
What about all the cars headed to the junkyards. Feels like there should be a lot of good units avail through that route still?
