Recently did something similar with the purchase of a 2004 9-3 Aero convertible. The rear-most hydraulic cylinders needed to be rebuilt soon afterward, then things started working properly. Those cylinders operate the tonneau cover and I was told are the most common to fail. Look for sign of fluid leakage around the rear wheels where leaks drain and open the tonneau manually to look for leaks. The fluid level in the hydraulic pump can be checked after removing the right side trunk side liner, which requires removing the center sill cover first. Maybe the messages that appear on the windshield display when trying to operate the top would help. I understand rust on the front subframe can be a problem so check that if It is in the rust belt. I put a heat shield under the ECU because it is mounted in a bad spot for heat and I understand they eventually fail. My car has only 70k+ miles so other things work pretty well. I replaced the buttons on the climate control unit because they were degraded and sticky. The radio buttons had already been replaced. Both sets of buttons are available and a fairly easy job to replace if you don’t mind fiddling with plastic bits. The dash and surrounding plastic pieces have some sort of crappy plastic coating that is easily chipped. The radio doesn’t have the best sound and I need to check for dead speakers as there are 13 of them. Maybe some others could provide more expert advice.
