Auto trans FA57 vs AF40 Reliability

I have a 6 speed MT so never looked at the AT very closely, but am considering an AT model for family members.

Besides the obvious that the FA57 is a 5-speed auto and the AF40 is a 6-speed auto, can anyone comment on the reliability / durability of the two models?

Also I see that earlier 2003 models may have had an older variant of the FA57. Is that one any worse than the newer FA57 if it is been treated well? I guess I am looking for a "here are the best years / best auto trans models if you are looking to buy one" sort of guide.
