If I wanted to change the bearing with the transfer case still in the car
by pulling the shaft out of the case just enough to get a puller on the bearing,
would you recommend I still drain the transfer case fluid ?
How about the automatic transmission fluid ?
Do you think I could avoid draining the fluid by only jacking up the passenger side of the car ?
I would be therefore tilting the case and the fluid away from the bearing.
By pulling the shaft out that small amount, do you know if the fluid from the transfer case could still mix with the auto trans fluid ?
Would it make sense to pull the shaft entirely out of the case and change the bearing on the bench ?
Again would that necessitate draining both fluids ?
How difficult would it be to reinsert the shaft ?
I also thought of another game plan by purchasing a fancy bearing puller from Amazon
which is designed to grab in between the inner and outer races.
I'm not sure how successful I'll be but in theory it will allow me to avoid pulling the shaft at all.
If the bearing does come out, do you think some fluid will as well ?
Do you think I can tap the bearing back onto the shaft without exerting too much force on the shaft ?
Obviously I don't want to damage anything internal to the transfer case.
Sorry for all the questions but I have already pulled the sub-frame and prop shaft once.
I would really like to avoid doing it again even with the car on a 4 post lift.
Any and all pointers would be greatly appreciated.
