I went with good quality LEDs on my '08 Combi (Diode Dynamics SL1), having had good luck with their LED bulbs in a NG 9-5 that I previously owned. The diode arrangement and light output characteristics were as close as to the original halogen filaments that I could find on the market. The diode arrangement and thus lightput are faithful to the original halogen bulbs, so I've had no issues with blinding other drivers, realizing the correct beam pattern projected and a color temp that closely matches the 'eyelids'.

On our '05 Arc, the options for a good quality H7 LED aren't great from what I can tell, so I may have to experiment and try something like you did.

The '04 convertible here has factory HIDs, and they're all right. Not as good as the LEDs, and not as good as the HIDs on either the current NG 9-5 or the X350 Jaguar in the garage (both of those cars use D1S lamps instead of the D2S on the 9-3s.
