1. Tax implications - If you trade in the car, you are able to reduce the purchase price of the new car. In your example, that would be $900 assuming a 6% tax rate. So your 10% 'profit' ($1500) just got reduced by 60%. Is it really worth the hassle of finding a buyer and going the steps necessary to sell the car on your own?
2. Can't afford to have 2 cars - most likely, if you sell on your own, you will buy before you sell because you need at least one car. I would think most people would rather 'exchange' vehicles at the dealer rather than manage the process themselves.
