Same thing happened to me when I first got my '99 9-3 (I think the same 2.0L 4 cylinder as the new SS). It was a strong sulphurous smell, and it came from the exhaust but only when it got really hot on a drive back from my parents' place. This was due to years of buildup from the previous owner using cheap gas and driving the stickshift conservatively. I talked to the saab tech about it, and he said 1) use a fuel treatment (Techron concentrate seems to be the favorite of this site) 2) buy good hi octane gas and then 3) rev the RPMs out really well for a good 10 or 15 minutes and blow out those deposits (ie driving in 4th at 80mph on the interstate or 65 in 3rd [~4k RPMs, dont worry the engine can take it, and its really good for it from time to time] dont know what to tell you if you have an auto tranny). He also told me to rev into the 3.5-4k range during normal driving to keep the exhaust system well ventilated. Sometimes after lotsa city driving I notice the smell and just get on the highway and drive really hard and it goes away. Its really the funnest auto maintenance I get to do. Hope this helps!!
