As to octane-
Use the lowest octane that gives you full engine performance. As Ryan has pointed out, using too low an octane will show up as poor performance. If your car runs OK on the present octane, try a tank of one level down. If that runs poorly, go up a grade.
Every engine is a little different. In general, the higher-output engines require higher octane. However, there is no across-the-board recommendation. Different brands are different, also. I would stick with the same one or two brands, and avoid 'off-brand' gas.
As to your soon-to-be-sister-in-law, again, try different brand of gas. Rotten egg smell is burning sulfur, and that can be due to off-brand/poor quality fuel.
