Whomp whomp rear wheel noise

Test drove a 1999 Saab 9-3 SE, manual, 5 door, 47,000 miles, one owner, asking $10,500. There was an obvious whomp, whomp, noise which I thought was coming from right rear of car. Dealer's mechanic drove it and thought the same (I didn't tell him what I thought), felt the tire and said it was "scalloped".
Dealer said he'd replace all tires, even asked me which ones I'd like! (within reason) But I'm more concerned about what caused this to happen. Was it a defective tire, bad alignment, wheel, axle, strut, spring, bearing etc...
Any ideas on likely cause? Do I need to worry about a serious problem?
Otherwise, car seemed in very good condition.
Dealer said he hadn't had a chance to check it over mechanically because it just came in, which is true.
Dealer (a used luxury car dealer, not a Saab dealer)is offering a 3 month warranty. Obviously it is only as good as the dealer.
Anything else I should be looking out for in this car before buying?
