A 15k oil change interval, or 15k approximately when the oil life monitor in the SID tell you to under "normal" conditions, might merit your consideration. A lot has changed since the 3k oil change. Engines used to be mostly cast iron, not the aluminum and steel and virtual racing specs of today. When detergent oils came along, intervals went to 5-7k. When unleaded gas came along and the lead no longer formed the condensation in the crankcase, oil change intervals went to 7-10k.

Now a 9-3SS used full synthetic. When synthetics were first introduced, oh say 20 years ago, they were touted as never needing changing. A 9-3SS uses 6+ quarts too, not the more normal 4+ quarts. Pretty much all the big highline car companies, BMW, MBZ and so forth use full synthetic and 15k ish oil changes and oil life monitors. Many GM cars still use dino oil and oil life monitors and go 10k.

Long before synthetic became common, folks were getting well in excess of 200,000 miles before wear issues cropped up. Destructive engine wear used to be a guaranteed thing at 100k with non detergent oil and leaded gas and cast iron engines.

Some synthetic oil companies used to suggest not using synthetic to break an engine in. Now there's a line of thought that says when synthetic is used from the beginning it may not be such a good idea to change it early to allow the engine to wear in.
