You're looking at two different sizes of car...
The Honda is bigger on the inside and outside than the others. If you like that size, I'd also look at the Subaru Legacy (the old one was a great car, and the new one is supposed to be even better, and AWD is standard). The Legacy is slightly smaller than the Accord, I think.
If you want the smaller size, I'd also look at the Mazda3. Fun, practical car.
The 9-3SS is in between those two sizes, but there's not a whole lot else that size that I know of. The Nissan Altima is one option. Ugly, though.
My choices would be the Accord or the Legacy. Both are great cars. The Accord is a Honda...not much more I need to say about that. You're getting great quality, value, and reliability. The Legacy is pretty close, plus it's designed to be a bit sportier and has AWD.
BTW, my girlfriend just bought a Honda, and probably won't ever own a Saab, so I know how that goes. She got a '98 Prelude. Amazing handling; it makes my 9-3 feel like a boat. It can't keep up with the turbo, though :)
