Slips in 3rd? Does it slip in 4th and 5th too? Floor it in 4th on a hill. If it slips then, the clutch will fail soon. If it doesn't slip in 4th, something else is going on in 3rd.
Advice: If you have to do it, do the slave cylinder at the same time. A couple extra hundred bucks but a wise investment. The total job will be closer to $1,500 than to $1,000 if you have a dealer do it.
65k is very, very early. I have run Saab HOT turbos for years - several for over 140k miles - and have never had to replace a clutch. We did one on my wife's 9000S at 120k miles because an idiot mechanic butchered a master cylinder job, taking out the slave. The labor to get to the slave is the same as doing the entire clutch, so we did it. Inspection showed the clutch was still in fine shape at 120K.
If you need to replace a Saab clutch at 65k, my suspicion is that somewhere along the line someone did not drive it properly.
