A firefighter friend relayed this story to me. This morning he responded to an apparent stolen car that was arsoned after a joy-ride. The car was a 9-5 areo. He noted a couple of things that I got a kick out of. First, the passenger compartment was filled with and held the water up to the windows (that had blown out). By the time they made it there, the bulk of the interior had already melted. When the airbag deployed (from the heat) it crushed the steering column. Then after burning it left just a ring for the wheel stuck where the dashboard was.
Per protocol, they always check the trunk for a body. He stated that usually with one strike they can dislodge the locking mechanism. After several strikes the cylinder couldn't be dislodged (too much steel) and instead they had to go in via the sheet metal.
They also open the hood. As the handle was melted on the inside, they have a technique where they peel the hood back. The 9-5 didn't give in the usual one side and required two sides and some creativity to open. This is due to the two latches and the middle catch. Most cars have one latch and the safety catch.
Of note, the gas tank never blew, and he noted the firewall allowed the engine compartment to be "untouched". He was real impressed with the firewall especially in light of the completely melted interior. He noted that the crossbeams never bucked and glowed red giving the scene an orange hue even after the flames were out-another unusual event.
